How often you get it set up is up to you. If you're playing a lot, maybe twice a year, if you're just getting started get it set up when you get it, and then you may notice that a year later it's starting to develop some issues.

Everything from temperature and humidity, to how it's stored, how you play, and how often you play can affect your instrument. It's important that you get it looked at when you first notice an issue, and a set up will typically fix the issue and also prevent others from forming.

Please, don't toss it! Not before you talk to me! I can't say that I can fix everything. And to be certain, some things aren't worth saving, and others simply can't be saved.
