Whether it's a new guitar, or something that's been sitting around collecting dust, it could probably use a set up.
A good set up is essential for a new guitar, and like you car, regular service can prevent bigger problems down the road!
The most common problems; fret buzz, dead spots, scratchy sounds when adjusting the tone or volume, not staying in tune, just sounding "off" when you play it, high action, etc. can be solved with a set up.
I work like a trusted mechanic, if I run into something that's going to cost you more than a few bucks extra I'll text you to let you know what the issue is and what it should reasonably cost to fix it.
I take this very seriously. Not just your satisfaction, but if I say I'll fix something and I can't do it to MY satisfaction, I won't charge you.
A Setup is an important, and often overlooked part of owning a guitar. whether it's fresh from the factory, from a shop, a friend or free on the internet, every guitar benefits from a setup.
Once I have it in hand, and we've discussed what issues you've noticed. I'll inspect the guitar for any obvious issues, like buzzy frets, noisy volume and tone knobs, etc. Then it's down to work!
The All Inclusive Setup looks like this:
Frets polished
Fretboard oiled
Bridge and saddles checked and adjusted
Pickup Height checked and adjusted
Action checked and adjusted
Neck relief checked and adjusted
Electronics checked and cleaned
Nut lubricated
Intonation set
Tightening any loose nuts, (output jack, tuning machines etc.)
Body cleaned
Depending on what I find during my inspection and while doing the work, the following is also included:
Frets leveled
Frets crowned
Fret end dressing
Pick up height inspected adjusted
Cold solder joints resoldered
Essentially, I will take your instrument through a thorough inspection, headstock to strap button, and made to play the best that it can so you can focus on playing
And if needed these things, and any others that I haven't mentioned will incur a fee based on parts and labor.
Tone/Volume pots replaced
Output jack replaced
Tuning machines replaced or repaired
Pickups upgraded or replaced
A restring is included if you provide strings (I can provide strings for an additional fee)
And of course, this is all backed by my 100% satisfaction guarantee!
When you're ready, here's what to do:
Call, text, or email me. Expect to answer some basic questions to make sure I know what you're looking for
Set up a day and time to drop off your Instrument
I'll get to work! I generally can turn most setups and check-ups in a day or two.
Get a text from me letting you know it's ready to pick up, I'll include an invoice with details about what was done, and recommendations for care and future work. Then we'll arrange a pick up day and time.
Pick up time! When you arrive, I'll let you play the guitar for a bit to make sure everything looks fine, if you'd like to set an appointment for a 6 month checkup we can do that, and then you're on your way!
It's that easy!

Whether you've gotten a new guitar, and old one that's been sitting around, or you're gifting it to someone, you should get a set up done. It's easier that you think to get one done. I can usually turn around an electric guitar set up in a day or two. If I run into an issue that needs a part, then I'll let you know as soon as it's apparent, with an updated timeline.
For example, I recently did an electric set up for a returning customer, during the set up I had to rebuild a tuning machine (I couldn't find a matching replacement) it added two days to the total job because I had to order a part. I tacked on a few bucks to cover the cost and the guitar played like new.
I wish that someone had told me about the importance of a setup on a new guitar when I was a budding young guitarist. It would have saved me a lot of pain and aggravation, and I probably would have liked practicing a lot more.
My first guitar experience was not great. I thought my issues were because if the quality of the guitar and I begged for a better one. But the truth is that it was just never set up properly.
That's why I feel it's so important that you get them set up (fret dressing/leveling and polishing, action, neck relief, and intonation) as soon as you can when you're just starting. It will make practice time more enjoyable.
How often you get it set up is up to you. If you're playing a lot, maybe twice a year, if you're just getting started get it set up when you get it, and then you may notice that a year later it's starting to develop some issues.
Everything from temperature and humidity, to how it's stored, how you play, and how often you play can affect your instrument. It's important that you get it looked at when you first notice an issue, and a set up will typically fix the issue and also prevent others from forming.
